Remote Labs and virtual Learning Environment

In the course of the fourth industrial revolution, which leads to an increased merging of digital environments and the real world, an in-depth understanding for digital technologies will become more and more important for professional engineers. ELLI2 addresses these developments in the “Remote Labs”, “Virtual Labs” and “E-Learning and Mobile Learning” spheres of activity.

Teaching in Labs

Learning in the lab enables students to develop a variety of subject-related and interdisciplinary competences. ELLI 2 focuses on developing guidelines for teachers in engineering laboratories. Based on these new concepts, a professional development workshop and consulting service on lab-based teaching will be established and offered across locations.

Extension of tele-operative testing cell and integration of new experiments

The developed tele-operative testing cell enables students to conduct experiments via internet. In a next step, the tele-operative testing cell will be extended by new experiments. An experiment on additive manufacturing (“3D-Printing”) and a bending process will be added. Therefore, a wide range of experiments in the field of forming technology will be available.

Broadening the portfolio of virtual and remote laboratories

The laboratories provided in the ELLI project in cooperation with 10 chairs of 3 faculties cater to a wide variety of target groups due to their high range of options for use. Currently, the individual labs are designed for specific stages of the curriculum. Future didactic developments of the portfolio will address students of all experience levels, pupils, and the general public.

Enabling deeper understanding through process virtualization

A variety of digital tools and media for process virtualization will be tested and validated within teaching practice. The faculty’s experiences will be documented and evaluated to provide the basis for measure ‘Ways to digitally enhanced teaching’. Focal subjects of teaching will be the mathematical modeling of high pressure mixing processes and the analysis of porous materials.

Forming processes in the virtual-reality-lab

During forming processes the forming- or process-field cannot be observed because of the tools or the machine itself. With the use of augmented- and virtual-reality new perspectives can be developed. Therefore, these new technologies enable a better view on forming-process and students can benefit by this new views.

The Preparation of Education for Industry 4.0

This measure targets the realization of virtual learning environments with regard to decentralized learning in an Industry 4.0 context. Methods of production will be illustrated in a realistic, usage-oriented way by the help of immersive gateways.

Voice training in mixed reality

The aim of this activity is to offer immersive voice training by use of a mixed reality simulator which is to be developed. Lecture halls are optically and acoustically measured to design hybrid reality teaching environments. These will be used for voice training for teaching staff.

Recommendation System for E-Learning Materials

This measure is about the “elearning-finder”. It is a recommendation system for e-learning formats intended for teaching staff. Initially, the teachers fill out a questionnaire about their lecture. Based on the teacher’s answers, an individual recommendation is composed.

Gamification and Mixed Reality-Training for Teaching Staff

This measure will identify the requirements of teaching staff, in order to implement elements of gamification and Mixed Reality in their lectures.

Digitally enhanced teaching

An interactive course will provide a portfolio of ideas and concepts for the integration of digital elements in teaching.  Teachers will present on their own experiences with digital tools and media and enable their colleagues to explore them from a learner’s perspective. Besides profiting from their colleagues’ advice, faculty will also be offered support when implementing digital enhancement in their own courses.

Mobile Learning

In ELLI 2, further tools for mobile learning will be identified, adapted to the needs of engineering education and made available for teachers and students. Besides cooperation and communication, the focus is on personalized learning and interactivity within lectures.
